The economic analysis compared standard monitoring to the addition of Sensium’s vital sign monitoring on postoperative patients. “[The use of Sensium] is a cost-saving and cost-effective strategy, yielding improvements in recovery with decreased health resource use”, the researchers stated.

According to the study, the largest cost savings come from reduced lengths of stays and hospitals readmissions and could save £466 per patient. By utilising Sensium in a typical 30 bedded ward expecting to treat 1500 patients, hospitals could expect to see savings in the region of £700K per year.

“SensiumVitals could aid physicians in the identification of early deterioration and consequently provide cost-savings to the health system in the UK”, the researchers further noted.

Alison Burdett

Alison Burdett, Chief Scientific Officer at Sensium stated: “Previously published research has shown the clinical benefits of monitoring post-surgical patients using Sensium, with patients developing sepsis receiving antibiotics on average 6 hours earlier than those on manual monitoring alone.  We are now pleased to see the results of this new publication, which highlights the economic benefits of using Sensium for early detection of deterioration, allowing early intervention and thus reduced length of stay and readmission rates”.
